From your President-Elect
Director of Public Affairs BJWSA | President-Elect SCPRSA
Inspiration comes from many places. This week, as I browsed a colleague’s bulletin board, I came across some gems from “Making it Easier to tell the Truth at Work,” which operates under a motto of “Ask more. Assume less.”
WHERE has THIS been all my life?
Here’s the first excerpt to catch my eye – “Got FEEDBACK that doesn’t feel RIGHT? ASK the people you’re closest to for their impressions. They’ll tell you – if you ask – and make it SAFE to tell you the TRUTH.”
How many times do we misconstrue someone’s more direct communication style or wish we could be more assertive – yet stay polite, tactful and objective?
Nugget Number two: “People are tired, busy and stressed. Be nice to people just because… it will make your day, their day and your work environment better.”
Basic Golden Rule here – but add COVID-19, working from home, schooling kids while working at home, witnessing a 24-hour news cycle of bad news and having our lives change for (maybe) forever!
And finally, a bit of Dale Carnegie: “If you want to influence someone, DON’T TALK. LISTEN. 1. Ask a question. 2. Listen to the answer. 3. Ask another question. 4. Listen to the answer.” Lather, rinse, repeat…
After 31 years of marriage, my husband and I like to play a game when we attend social gatherings. The game is “Who did you learn about vs. who learned something about YOU?”
That leaves me with my final question, “Is there anyone more charming than someone who’s trying to get to know you? Is there a better colleague than one who operates with tact and diplomacy?”
