We Are Stronger Together: Investing in Collaboration, Professional Development and Public Trust
Dear SCPRSA Members,
As communicators and public relations professionals, we know our profession never stands still. Emerging technologies, evolving media platforms and constantly changing public expectations require us to continually learn, adapt and grow. That is why investing in professional development and collaborating with like-minded communicators are so important.
Recently, communications professionals from the City of Columbia, including myself, attended the Public Relations Society of America’s 2026 Public Affairs and Government Summit in Cincinnati, Ohio. The conference brought together communications leaders from across the country representing government, nonprofit, military and private-sector organizations to exchange ideas, explore emerging trends and strengthen the profession through collaboration.
One of the strongest themes throughout the conference was the growing influence of artificial intelligence and social media on public communications. While these technologies continue to transform how we connect with our audiences and communities, they also present new challenges. The speed at which misinformation spreads, the influence of algorithms on public discourse and the increasing demand for timely, transparent communication reinforce the critical role public relations professionals play as trusted sources of credible information.
Another key takeaway centered on crisis communications. Effective crisis response begins long before an emergency occurs. Organizations that consistently communicate with honesty, transparency and empathy establish credibility that becomes invaluable when unexpected situations and emergencies arise. Preparation, relationship-building and clear communication remain the foundation of successful crisis response, regardless of the platform or audience.
Perhaps one of the most valuable aspects of this conference, as with other professional development events, was the opportunity to connect with fellow communications professionals. Conversations before, after and during sessions often generate just as many ideas as the formal programming, reminding us that no single organization has all the answers. Sharing experiences, discussing challenges and learning from one another ultimately strengthen our ability to serve the public.
That same spirit is what makes the South Carolina Public Relations Society of America so valuable. While national conferences provide broad perspectives, our local chapter gives us the opportunity to build meaningful relationships with professionals across South Carolina who understand the unique opportunities and challenges facing our communities. Through regular meetings, networking and professional development, SCPRSA aims to create an environment where members can exchange ideas, celebrate successes and support one another as our profession continues to evolve.
Whether responding to a crisis, navigating the rapidly changing world of AI and social media or finding new ways to engage with our audiences, we are stronger together. By investing in professional development and maintaining strong connections with communications professionals across our state, we not only elevate our profession but also better serve the people and organizations that rely on us every day.
Warm Regards,
